Pupil Transportation Office

The Pupil Transportation Office (PTO) is responsible for developing and implementing statewide policies to assist all 24 local public school systems in ensuring the safe transport of Maryland’s 845,700 students, of which 618,742 are eligible to take advantage of the safest form of land transportation, the school bus.

The PTO also oversees local school bus driver training programs and school bus inspections in coordination with the School Vehicle Division of the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). Some additional responsibilities include coordination of activities amongst a variety of local and state transportation organizations, researching information and developing data concerning finance and legislation, and responding to citizen inquiries for the Governor, Legislators or State School Superintendent on/regarding
school transportation matters.

In Focus
Maryland State Department of Education Fact Book: Transportation (2013-2014)

A final and important responsibility is the collection of data for five state-mandated annual reports: accidents; number of students transported; operational reports on the number of vehicles and miles traveled; an alcohol and controlled substances testing report and the maintenance of a state database of disqualified school bus drivers; and students with disabilities.
