Media Alert: Maryland State Board Of Education To Meet On Tuesday, May 24

Baltimore, MD (May 20, 2016)

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 24, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m. 

The State  Board also will hold an information session on Monday, May 23, beginning at 1 p.m. in conference room 6 on MSDE’s 8th floor.  Board members will hear reports on teacher preparation, gifted and talented education, and disproportionality in student discipline.

Items on the Tuesday agenda include the following: 

9:05 a.m.         English Learners Update
The State Board will hear a report regarding the Maryland English Language Learners Task Force.  It was created a year ago as a conduit for study and action targeting the challenges and opportunities associated with the State’s growing English Learner student population.

9:45 a.m.         Educator Evaluation
The State Board will hear a progress report on Maryland’s Teacher and Principal Evaluation System, with a focus on how the evaluation framework could evolve.

11 a.m.           Teachers of the Year
Board members will honor the State’s 2016-17 Teachers of the Year from the 24 local school systems with a presentation and a luncheon.

2:30 p.m.         Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC)
Angela Chin, MASC’s 2015-16 President and a student at Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Prince George’s County, will outline the organization’s successes for the past year.  She also will introduce State Board members to MASC’s incoming leadership.
