Media Alert: Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, June 23

Baltimore, MD (June 18, 2015)

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 23, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m. 

Items on the agenda include the following:

10:10 a.m.       State Assessments
The State Board is scheduled to act on a proposal that would provide a number of optional high school assessments for local school districts, some of which could be used to determine college and career readiness.

10:55 a.m.       Alternative Certification
The State Board will discuss recent legislation that required Board members to consider alternative teacher certification programs for areas of the State experiencing critical teacher shortages.

11:15 a.m.       Equitable Access for Excellent Educators
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has asked each State to develop a plan to ensure that economically disadvantaged and minority children are taught by qualified, experienced teachers.  MSDE will seek approval from the State Board on its plan.

11:45 a.m.       Recognition of Members Leaving Board Service
The State Board will recognize Board President Dr. Mary Kay Finan and student member Steven Priester whose terms are expiring after the June meeting.
