WHAT: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory will host the Maryland Summer Center for Space Science allowing students to study the current applications of space technology and explore the solar system by simulating the design of a NASA Discovery Mission, while learning about the exciting careers within the space program.

The 2014 Maryland Summer Centers Program continues a 46 year commitment at the State level to provide summer educational opportunities for Maryland’s gifted and talented students. The program, coordinated through the Maryland State Department of Education, in partnership with public and nonpublic agencies, provides Maryland’s diverse gifted and talented student population with advanced, rigorous, experiential learning opportunities that nurture these students’ talents and abilities within unique learning environments.

WHO: Gifted and Talented students entering grades 6 – 7, will be part of a Space Center Team that will design a space mission, build a scale model of a spacecraft with scientists and engineers, launch a water bottle rocket, and take a field trip to a space center.
