Bisexual Teens at Highest Risk of Bullying and Suicide

This article reports in brief on the findings of a study conducted at the Univerity of Illinois, which found thaht lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth and those questioning their sexuality, are at greater risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts, bullying by their peers and truancy. The study, published in the October 2011 issue of the journal Educational Researcher, also revealed some striking differences among the various groups of sexual minority youth. Harsh Realities

Over the past decade, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) has documented the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students with the biennial National School Climate Survey (NSCS). These reports repeatedly underscore the fact that LGBT students face high levels of victimization based on both sexual orientation and gender expression, providing an overview of school climate for the LGBT student population in general. Harsh Realities is the newest addition to this important body of research, and is GLSEN's first report focused on the school experiences of transgender students. This study illuminates the unique challenges faced by transgender students, who often challenge societal norms of gender and can face additional unique obstacles in school. 67 pages. Published 2009. School Victimization and Young Adult Psychosocial Adjustment

The 2009 National School Climate Survey

This 164-page report is from the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). GLSEN began data collection in 1999 on the school experiences of LGBT students, in order to fill a critical void in knowledge and understanding of the ways LGBT issues played out in schools.
