The Maryland State Department of Education is observing National Child and Adult Care Food Program Week, March 16-22, 2014.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), funded by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), helps child care and adult day care providers to serve nutritious meals to children and qualifying adults attending child care homes and centers, through reimbursement for meals that meet USDA standards.

Providers receive nutrition education and support services through the CACFP that help them serve nutritious meals and create a positive eating environment. In addition, providers have opportunities to participate in training and grants to promote good nutrition and physical activity. The quality of child care provided in our state is improved due to the educational and financial resources available to caregivers through the CACFP.

In 2013, more than 600 child and adult care centers in the state of Maryland served an average of ten million breakfasts and lunches to over 20,000 participants.

“The Maryland State Department of Education, along with Governor O’Malley, recognizes the critical role that proper nutrition plays in the health and development of children,” said State Superintendent of Schools Lillian M. Lowery. “The early establishment of healthy habits is a vital beginning to a lifespan of wellness.”
